Three types of raw tomatoes -- red plum, red Roma and round red tomatoes -- grown in 17 states are voluntarily being pulled of the shelves and menus of McDonald's (NYSE: MCD), Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), Burger King (NYSE: BKC), Kroger (NYSE: KR), Outback Steakhouse, Winn-Dixie (NYSE: WINN) and Taco Bell, among others. In fact, "McDonald's has stopped serving sliced tomatoes on its sandwiches as a precaution, but will continue serving grape tomatoes in its salads because no problems have been linked to that variety."

Similarly, Burger King, <data industry="5700" symbol="YUM" type="stock">Yum Brands Inc</data>. (NYSE: YUM) restaurants, Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI), and <data industry="5700" symbol="CMG" type="stock">Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc</data>. (NYSE: CMG) have also removed the contaminated brands from their menus across the U.S., and some, like Burger King, in Canada, Puerto Rico and some other Caribbean islands as well. Many left the non-contaminated brands on the menu.

Getting salmonella is not fun. It's a bacteria that lives in the intestinal tracts of humans and most infected people suffer fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps starting 12 to 72 hours after infection and lasting for 4-7 days. The FDA hasn't found the source of the contamination, although it usually means contact with animal feces.

Tomatoes are probably the healthiest thing in many fast food sandwiches and on many menu items, but I guess not when they are contaminated. It's just too bad that this happened in the midst of the "good tomatoes" season. After eating tomatoes that taste and feel like plastic all winter long, it's a treat to have those summery sweet tomatoes. I guess we'll just have to stick to the non-contaminated brands and cooked tomatoes dishes like tomato-based pasta sauces.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Will McDonald's report tasty earnings?

Filed under: Earnings reports, Starbucks (SBUX), McDonald's (MCD), Darden Restaurants (DRI)
How is McDonald's Corporation (NYSE: MCD) holding up during the economic downturn?

The largest restaurant chain is expected to report profit of 70 cents per share on revenue of $5.4 billion, according to Thomson Financial. Their average price target for the company's stock is $62.64, above the $58.64 where it recently traded. Its Red Lobster (seafood), Olive Garden (Italian cuisine), LongHorn Steakhouse (steak), Bahama Breeze (Caribbean items) and Capital Grille (steak) chains cater to families, with mid-priced menu items and generally suburban locations. A small group of Seasons 52 restaurants feature a casual grill and wine bar concept. Brinker International (NYSE: EAT) and Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) are competitors.

The company pleased investors last week, when it reported fiscal Q3 EPS of 85 cents and revenues of $1.81 billion. Analysts had been looking for 82 cents and $1.80 billion. Management also guided FY08 EPS to about $2.71-$2.76 ($2.72 consensus) and FY08 revenues to about $6.63-$6.68 billion ($6.64B consensus). Raymond James subsequently upgraded the shares to "strong buy".

The stock popped into a bullish "flag" consolidation pattern on the news. Prices frequently exit flags moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Altogether, brokers now recommend the issue with three "strong buys", six "buys", six "holds" and one "sell". The DRI P/E ratio (13.59), PEG ratio (1.09), Price to Sales ratio (0.78), Price to Book ratio (3.72), Price to Cash Flow ratio (8.23), Sales Growth rate (24.98%), Return on Assets (9.25%), Return on Investment (13.35%) and Return on Equity (28.65%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutions hold about 78% of the outstanding shares. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 500 Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $20.89 and $47.60. A stop-loss of $29.10 looks good here.

Each of the four Chief Executives acknowledged the tough going in the economy, yet each also sought to inject a thread of optimistic patience into their commentary.

Mike Jackson, CEO, Auto Nation Inc. (NYSE: AN), came to the defense of Reserve Board Chair Ben Bernanke. While admitting that the chairman may have crawled blindly into what is now mostly economic turmoil, Jackson stated: "...I think he absolutely has it right now. He's got to be on full flight recession mode, and we'll worry about the dollar, and commodities and inflation later." Personally, I think Benanke should be making moves to protect the consumers and their dollars first, and let inflation take care of itself until the consumer sector is back up to speed.

Wilbur Ross, CEO, W L Ross & Co. Played the most obtuse card stating: "My own opinion is that it's just more of the same volatility." More of the same volatility? Yeah the economy is volatile ... DUH!
Clarence Otis, CEO, Darden Restaurants Inc. (NYSE: DRI). My guess is that CEO Otis is feeling the most pressure right now. He stated: "Certainly there are some pressures on discretionary income and with what we see as a result of that is fewer restaurant visits across the board..." I think CEO Otis is optimistically hedging his bets. We'll know more when Q3 numbers come through.

John Hofmeister, CEO Shell Oil U.S. Operations Hofmeister made probably the most powerful statement of the day: "Well, actually a lot of people will hate me for saying this but gasoline is a real bargain right now give the crude price." The fact of the matter is that he's right. Gasoline prices at the pump have in no way been tracking commodity crude prices. We should be thankful we're not paying $7 for a gallon of gas.

For a better look at the interviews of these four CEOs, check out the video clips on CNBC.com.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Gary E.
The company pleased investors last week, when it guided fiscal Q3 EPS to 83-85 cents. Analysts had been looking for 77 cents. Management also said it expected Y08 EPS of about $2.71-$2.76 ($2.66 consensus).

DRI shares popped on the news and have since settled into a bullish "pennant" consolidation pattern. Prices frequently exit pennants moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Brokers recommend the issue with three "strong buys", five "buys", eight "holds" and one "sell". The DRI P/E ratio (12.23), PEG ratio (0.99), Price to Sales ratio (0.74), Price to Book ratio (3.36), Price to Cash Flow ratio (7.56), Price to Free Cash Flow ratio (18.75), Return on Assets (9.31%), Return on Investment (13.37%) and Return on Equity (28.43%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutions hold about 77% of the outstanding shares. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 500 Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $20.89 and $47.60. A stop-loss of $26.25 looks good here. Note that the firm is expected to announce Q3 results in mid-March.

But the group has been gaffed and gutted. Somehow I think that some of these can come back. I know it's not gonna happen now. Too many questions. But when? When things turn you won't be able to buy these anywhere near where they are.

Yet, in a world where gasoline seems like it is marching to $4/gallon, where McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) (Cramer's Take), which I own for <hlink href="http://secure2.thestreet.com/cap/prm.do?OID=005103&cm_cat=AA&cm_ite=005103&cm_ven=EMAIL">Action Alerts PLUS</hlink>, can be crushed in a heartbeat and when gold's going to $1,000, the conventional wisdom of just forgetting this group seems to be playing out perfectly.

Yet, one has to wonder how a solid chain with good financials and good balance sheet simply can't be a buy soon, especially when it is just six months from lapping some really bad numbers.

What really weighs against it besides the consumer? Too many stores and restaurants. Until we see some closings, some trimmings, some shuttings and some bankruptcies, as we saw in 1990, I guess the operative wisdom is "Forget about it."

The restaurant operator blamed the acquisition of RARE Hospitality and a "difficult consumer environment" for the drop. Analysts had expected DRI to earn 50 cents a share on revenue of $1.54 billion. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on DRI.

After hitting a one-year high of $47.60 in June, the stock hit a one-year low of $35.31 yesterday, which it has broken by a good measure this morning. Today, DRI opened at $31.72. So far today the stock has hit a low of $29.80 and a high of $31.85. As of 10:50, DRI is trading at $30.21, down 6.13 (-16.9%). The chart for DRI looks bearish and steady, while S&P gives the stock a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy rating.

For a bearish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a July bear-call credit spread above the $40 range. A bear-call credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of call options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make a 6.3% return in 7 months as long as DRI is below $40 at July expiration. Darden would have to rise by more than 32% before we would start to lose money.

DRI has been above $40 as recently as November but has fallen sharply today and has shown resistance around $39.70 recently. This trade could be risky if the company's earnings from last night are not as bleak as they seem at first, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by the big drop this morning.

Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at Investors Observer. Seems they weren't wrong, but I guess anyone following the market recently had already known that.

After a day where blue chip stocks (Dow) declined 1.3% and tech stocks (Nasdaq) dropped 2.3%, stock futures this Tuesday morning suggest a sharply higher open. The reason could be that central banks around the world have opened their coffers to tackled the credit crunch. Today, investors will look to more housing data and earnings from Goldman Sachs.

At 8:30 a.m. EST, an hour before the opening bell, the Department of Commerce will report November housing starts and building permits. As has recently been the case, no good news is expected to come from this sector. Economists are expecting housing starts to fall yet again to 1.175 million units in November from 1.229 million units in October. As MarketWatch claims, these are levels of about 50% from the peak. Similarly, building permits are expected to have declined last month. Even so, economists don't see the sector reaching a trough yet, expecting more declines.

As the housing data comes in, investors will also await to hear from the Federal Reserve and its plan to give home mortgage borrowers new protections against shady lending practices.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the European Central Bank continues its bid to alleviate the global credit crunch, offering $501 billion (€348 billion) to banks in short-term funding. The Bank of England too has offered $23 billion to lenders as part of the joint effort taken last week by the four central banks to alleviate the ongoing credit crisis.

This caused a recovery in European stock markets. Asian markets closed mixed.

Investors will also be looking at several companies reporting earnings today, most notably is Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS). Goldman, the Wall Street Journal reported last week, made nearly $4 billion from betting on a subprime downturn. No doubt, the bank has fared much better than its rivals in this mortgage crisis. Goldman stock is already up 2% in premarket trading.

Other companies reporting: Hovnanian Enterprises (NYSE: HOV), Best Buy (NYSE: BBY), Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI) and Palm Inc.
